Mountain Dew hit this one right out of the park. In this case, the skate park. They've created a giant pinball machine where the skaters take the place of the silver balls. And yes, it's awesome. Although it probably cost quite the pretty penny, it's peanuts compared to the amount of coverage this will get. It's viral and it's also cool. Two great attributes for any brand to be associated with. As someone working in the creative department, I hear these phrases a lot:
It's too risky.
We're not ready to take that step.
That's pushing way too far.
The problem that is so very difficult to overcome is that creative people think creatively, and see the value of an impactful campaign. But people who spend money buying these ads for their businesses, they analyse risk in a different way. And that, my friends, is why so many mediocre ads are out there right now. There's much more here. If you want to persuade your client to buy a risky campaign, it may be worth telling them that the greatest risk is to play it safe.
